Elderberry is a powerhouse Missouri native shrub that can easily form thickets. Elderberry blooms in June with delicate flat-topped clusters of lemony scented white blossoms. Blooms give way to small, deep purple berries that are commonly used in therapeutic syrups and tonics. Both flower and berry can be made into beverages. Berries should be cooked before eating.
Ideal in rain garden settings to stabilize soil and reduce rainwater runoff. Thickets form through underground suckers. Prune annually to control spread and habit. In full sun with moist soil, elderberry can grow to 12 feet tall.
