A fragrant favorite of the herbal garden, anise hyssop is easy to grow in average to poor well-drained soil with moderate moisture and full to part sun. Grows 2-4 feet tall with abundant purple spiked flowers growing in an upright habit.
Deadhead flowers after bloom to reduce self-seeding and promote additional blooms. Freely self-seeds. Fragrant leaves can be used for teas, tinctures and jellies. Flowers and fragrant leaves make a lovely addition to cut wildflower bouquets.
Native to parts of the upper Midwest and Great Plains (Wisconsin to Ontario west to British Columbia and south to Colorado) but naturalized in dry upland forested areas in the lower Midwest (MoBOT)
